Rik Makarem to leave Emmerdale

Emmerdale actor Rik Makarem has confirmed his departure from the soap after playing the part of Nikhil Sharma for nearly four years. The businessman arrived in the village during autumn 2009 and has been part of a number of high profile storylines since his arrival.

Sian Reese-Williams, who plays Nikhil's onscreen wife (Gennie Sharma) confimed her departure from the show earlier in the week.

Makarem told itv.com: "What a privilege for four years to be a part of such a brilliant show! Along with the creative team, it's been so enjoyable crafting the many wonderful 'under-surface' colours and quirks to my character. I will treasure the experience deeply.



When making my decision to leave, on both artistic and personal levels, I listened very closely to my heart. I'm naturally ambitious; I believe in taking risks, as that's how we truly learn about ourselves, how we grow, and with this integrity in mind, I'm completely inspired for the journey ahead."

The Emmerdale website has confirmed that both Gennie and Nikhil will appear "throughout the summer", but details surrounding their departure are being kept closely under wraps.
